태국경찰, 민주화 시위 나선 2017 광주인권상 수상자 자투밧 등 21인 체포‧구금

[더팩트ㅣ광주=박호재 기자] 5‧18 기념재단이 14일 태국정부가 민주화 시위를 준비중이던 21인의 시민을 체포‧구금한 사태를 국제사회에 고발하는 성명서를 발표했다.

이날 체포된 시위자중에는 2017년 광주인권상 수상자로 선정된 자투팟 분팟타라락사(Jatupat Boonpattararaksa)가 포함돼있으며 이들은 1973년 태국 독재정권에 의해 자행된 민주화시위 유혈탄압을 규탄하는 항의 시위를 준비하던 중에 체포되어 구금됐다.

자투밧은 당시 콘캔대학교(Khon Kaen University)의 법학부 학생으로서 2014년 11월 19일 군부지도자이자 총리인 프라윳 찬 오차 장군 앞에서 저항의 상징적인 행위로 ‘세 손가락 경례’를 해 당국의 집중 감시 대상이 돼 자신 은 물론 그의 가족들은 큰 고통을 겪었다. 그러나 자투밧은 이에 굴하지 않고 조직적인 반쿠데타 활동을 벌여왔다.

5‧18기념재단은 성명서에서 "14일은 태국 민주주의 역사에 중요한 날이다. 1973년 바로 이날 라자담넌 대로에서 시민들은 단지 독재에 저항하고 민주주의를 원했다는 이유만으로 죽임을 당하고 체포되었다. 오늘 태국의 젊은이들은 동일한 열망으로 다시 거리로 돌아왔다. 흰 리본과 세손가락 경례를 한 이들의 민주주의와 자유를 향한 열망의 몸짓은 우리 안에 살아 숨쉬고 있는 광주 5·18민주화운동의 젊은이들을 소환하고 있다"고 광주 5‧18과의 연대의 의미를 밝혔다.

또 재단은 "민주사회 건설을 위해 분투하는 이들의 용기를 높이 사고 평등사회를 향한 이들의 꿈을 존중하며 이들과 함께 굳건히 서고자 한다. 우리는 태국 정부의 "학생들이 너무 나가면 나라 전체가 불바다가 될 것이다"고 한 위협을 규탄한다. 국가는 소수의 지배 계층 또는 한 사람의 왕이 아닌 국민 모두의 것이다"고 강조했다.

이어서 재단은 2017년 광주인권상 수상자인 자투팟을 비롯한 21명의 민주주의를 지지하는 시위자들에 대한 태국 경찰의 임의 체포를 강력히 규탄하며 체포된 사람들의 즉각 석방, 정부 비판 국민들에 대한 탄압 중지 및 이들의 집회 및 결사의 자유를 보장할 것을 촉구했다.

The May 18 Memorial Foundation Is with the Thai Youth Fighting for Democracy!

The May 18 Memorial Foundation on October 14 reconfirms its steadfast support for the youth-driven protests for democracy in Thailand.

It is a significant day for the Thai democratization movement. On this day in 1973 protesters on Rajdamnoen Avenue were killed and arrested for the reason that they were against dictatorship and for democracy.

Today they, in a different generation but in the same spirit, are on the street again. Adorned with white knotted ribbons with a three-finger salute, their struggles for democracy recalls the Korean youth of the May 18 Democratic Uprising who still resonate in us.

We, the May 18 Memorial Foundation, laud their courage in the struggle for democracy, cherish their dream of an equal society, and stand firmly with them.

We condemn the Thai government for threatening her young by saying "the nation would be engulfed in flames if the students go too far". A country belongs to all the citizens not just to a few ruling elites or the monarch.

We also denounce the arbitrary arrests of 21 protesters by the Thai police, including Jatupat, the Laureate of the 2017 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights.

We compel the Thai government to 1) immediately release the arrestees, 2) stop harassing the pro-democracy protesters, 3) and guarantee their freedom of assembly and association.
